Iron Man Blu-ray Review
The movie of the summer is now THE movie to own on Blu-ray. Iron Man lands on Blu-ray in a few weeks, September 30, but we received an early copy to review. A full, longer review will be forthcoming — but here’s initial thoughts….
Iron Man is one of the best Blu-ray DVD releases. Images look truly high-def, crisp, with rich colors. If you want to impress your neighbors and friends with the power of Blu-ray, this is the DVD to own.
Not to mentioned a great script, acting and overall entertaining movie. What a blast! We love Batman, but brooding, darkness gets a little bit tired. That’s the diff — Iron Man is FUN…
It is obvious this Blu-ray was rushed (no commentary?!) — so I expect a fuller release to come out next year.
DVD to pass 90,000 titles
According to the DVD Release Report, the total number of DVDs available by the end of 2008 will pass the 90k mark. From now until the end of the year, a total of 90,440 titles are scheduled to be released. As far as Blu-ray goes, a total of 684 hi-def titles have been released, with another 191 coming in the end of the year. This includes high profile Blu-ray releases, including Iron Man, Indiana Jones, WALL-E, Sleeping Beauty, and the Godfather Trilogy.
Samsung: “Blu-ray has 5 years left”
Samsung has said that it sees the Blu-ray format only lasting a further 5 years before it is replaced by another format or technology.
“I think it [Blu-ray] has 5 years left, I certainly wouldn’t give it 10″, Andy Griffiths, director of consumer electronics at Samsung UK told Pocket-lint in an interview.
Hoping to capitalise before it’s too late, Griffiths believes that 2008 is the format’s year.
“It’s going to be huge”, he told Pocket-lint. “We are heavily back-ordered at the moment.”
Citing online rental sites like LoveFilm’s adoption of Blu-ray titles, the move to offer cheaper players and a now clear path to adoption following the Blu-ray HD DVD battle, Griffith says the format will be a winner, although not for long.
Instead Samsung is putting its faith in its OLED technology. The new technology, which is “ready to rock”, is being held back at the moment due to high manufacturing costs.
“We will launch the OLED technology when it’s at a price that will be appealing to the consumer, unfortunately that’s not yet.”
Griffiths, citing 2010 as a possible date for your calendar, told us he believes that when the technology becomes mainstream it will replace LCD.
“It’s gonna be big, but at the moment it’s a great story, not commercial, product.”

Sony Unveils Blu-Ray Fall Lineup
Sony Corp. showed its fall lineup of Blu-ray disc players and recorders, as it prepares for its first holiday season after winning the next-generation format battle against HD DVD.
The Japanese consumer electronics maker said it was making available two Blu-ray players world-wide and seven Blu-ray recorders in Japan. In the U.S., the two players are priced at $399 and about $2,000, respectively. The first has been available since July in the U.S. It will be available this month in Europe and December in Japan. The latter model will enter markets world-wide in early December.
Over the past several years, supporters of Blu-ray and HD DVD had expended much energy wooing movie studios, retailers and consumers as they fought fiercely to dominate the high-definition DVD market. The last holiday season was marked by big price cuts and free movie giveaways to try to attract consumers, who were uncertain about which format to support. Toshiba Corp., the leading supporter of HD DVD technology, finally admitted defeat in February.
This will be the first holiday season in which electronics makers can focus on selling Blu-ray players without the added burden of having to make an argument for the format first. It will be an important opportunity to target consumers, who are interested in watching high-definition movies but have been sitting on the sidelines.
Sony said it expects industrywide Blu-ray player and recorder sales to more than triple to about seven million units in the current business year ending March 2009, from 2.1 million a year earlier. Of that, Sony expects to sell 3.1 million units, which is about a 44% share. It also expects to sell 10 million PlayStation 3 videogame consoles, which can be used to watch Blu-ray movies.

Blu-ray’s Four-Year Surge Starts Now
Blu-ray discs will outsell standard DVDs in the U.S. by a 3-to-2 margin by 2012 as Blu-ray player prices fall, retailers clear more space for the format and more people use videogame consoles and other devices to watch the high-definition discs, according to a report released this week.
Blu-ray will overtake standard DVDs as the primary form of content software within the next four years, accounting for 61% of the U.S. DVDs sold by 2012, U.K.-based consultant Futuresource says. Such growth will easily outpace that in western Europe, where Blu-ray will account for between 39% and 50% of DVD sales by 2012, according to the report.
In June, trade group Entertainment Merchants Association said U.S. Blu-ray revenue will reach $9.5 billion by 2012.
“Much of the drive behind this increase is coming from growing consumer awareness and falling hardware prices, coupled with PlayStation 3 owners increasingly using their consoles for video playback,” Futuresource analyst Jack Wetherill said in a statement.
